Best ball, also known as fourball, is a team format in golf where each player on a team plays their own ball throughout the round. After each hole, the team records only the lowest score from amongst its players. For example, if on a team of four golfers, scores on a par-4 are 4, 5, 5, and 6, the team score recorded for that hole is 4.
The team format offers a more relaxed and social golfing experience compared to individual stroke play. It allows players of varying skill levels to contribute to the team’s success, reducing pressure on any single golfer. The history of this format traces back to social and friendly matches where collaborative play and enjoyment were prioritized over strict competition.
